Break Through Writer’s Block with These Five Tips
We’ve all have been there before: you’re sitting in front of your computer or your notebook and you just can’t seem to find the right words – or any words for that matter – to add to your work. It seems as though you have misplaced your creativity, and it feels like you’ve hit a mental wall. This struggle that we’re talking about is better known as “writer’s block” and today, we want to help you break through that wall and get back to writing!
Here are some tips to consider using to break through the barrier of writer’s block:
Stop what you are doing – One way to break through writer’s block is to actually give yourself a break! Sometimes overworking your brain, trying to force it to find those words that are buried so deep in the depths of your mind can do more harm than good. So take a moment and do something else, whether it’s reading a book, watching TV or simply taking a nap. Do something other than rack your brain for words you just can’t seem to find. Sometimes letting your mind just run free can help unleash that buried creativity, and the words will come tumbling out once again.
One step at a time – Sometimes when you’re in the midst of writer’s block, it can be helpful to record the random thoughts that are coming to your head. Whether it’s a word or a phrase, wherever you are, stop and write it down. Keep a notebook on your bedside table – those late night musings that seem completely random at 2 a.m. may be the spark you need in the light of day. Later on, come back to those notes and try to piece them together into cohesive sentences. This practice has the potential to jog your memory and get the writing ball rolling again.
Get up, get moving – One way to break through a wall is to walk around it. If you have writer’s block, go on a walk, take a jog or partake in another type of exercise. Basically, get up and get moving! Exercise releases endorphins that give you more energy and can help your brain function more efficiently. In short, getting your blood flowing can make your creativity flow as well.
Be creative and get inspired – To get your creative juices flowing, tap into another creative outlet. You could try painting, drawing, arts and crafts, or writing poetry. You don’t have to be good at it (you’re a writer, you don’t have to be an inspired sculptor as well!), but it should be something that makes you happy. If your self-portrait looks more like a stick figure, find a way to laugh with yourself. It’s these activities that can, in turn, inspire you to get back on the creative track of writing.
Silence is golden – Phone calls, people talking, music blaring in the background – these are just a few of the distractions that can disrupt your thought process while writing. Take some time to silence your phone and unplug from the world, and devote your full, undivided attention to your work. The time that you spend writing your book can be considered your “me time;” find a quiet and calm place, sit back, relax, brew a fresh pot of coffee or warm herbal tea, and start writing!
Although having writer’s block can be a frustrating experience, whatever you do, don’t get discouraged. Rather, remember these five tips and find the one that works best for you. Sooner or later you are going to break down that “wall” and your thoughts and words will flow once again, and your journey toward your goal of becoming a published author will continue!
